ELKLAN COURSE

The Isabella Trust are considering running the Elklan Lets Talk Together course for parents and carers. It is a practical training course for parents, carers wanting some key skills and knowledge in developing the communication skills of children with social communication need including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The course costs £155 per person or £187.50 per person if you want to complete the Level 1 qualification that goes with it. If enough parents are interested The Isabella Trust may be able to fund 50% of the costs for parents and carers. I have put the overview of the course below. This Let’s talk course is for parents, carers (including child minders) and school based practitioners wanting some key skills and knowledge in developing the communication skills of children with social communication needs including Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).Completion of this course can lead to exploring the issues involved in more depth by attending ‘Speech and Language Support for Verbal Children with ASD’. It is an accredited course and leads to a Level 1 six credit apt award in ‘Lets talk together’.

THE AIMS ARE
To share information about normal speech and language development and how children with social communication needs develop their communication skills.
To know about the different communication challenges these children have to deal with.
To discuss ideas and learn practical strategies to help them learn to listen, understand, talk and interact.
To meet other parents and carers.

TOPICS COVERED
What is communication and what is autism?
The Chat Challenge – how adults can help children with social communication needs interact more effectively.
Using physical and visual structure at home and in the workplace.
Develop listening and understanding. Asking questions and sharing books. Develop interaction with peers and adults. Behaviour is communication.
